  19. 1. About the program
  20.  
  21. XEP  converts  XSL  Formatting  Objects  documents  into Adobe PDF or
  22. PostScript format. The program is written in Java and requires a Java 
  23. Virtual Machine.  Sun  JRE or JDK version 1.3 or later is recommended 
  24. for best performance.
  25.  
  26. XEP  also runs under JDK/JRE 1.1.8, or Microsoft Java VM version 5.00 
  27. or higher.  The performance  will not be as good as  with  the latest 
  28. versions of Java VM. The software will not run on elder Java machines.

  31. 2. Installation
  32.  
  33.  A. Ensure you have a Java VM  installed.  If you have multiple  VMs 
  34.     on your  computer, pick  one of them.  The  installation  wizard 
  35.     configures XEP to run  on  the  same  Java VM  that was used for 
  36.     setup; you can change this later.

  38.  B. Run the setup from the jar file, using a Java VM of your choice.
  39.     If your Java VM supports Java 2 (JDK/JRE 1.2 or higher), you can 
  40.     run the jar by typing the following command on the prompt:
  41.     
  42.       java -jar setup331_trial.jar
  43.     
  44.     Alternatively,  for Java machines  that don't support executable
  45.     jar files, you can call Setup class from the jar, using standard
  46.     invocation methods.  E.g. for Microsoft Java, the syntax will be
  47.     as follows:
  48.     
  49.       jview /cp setup331_trial.jar Setup
  50.       
  51.     The system will first display the  license  agreement  for  this
  52.     edition of XEP; please read it carefully.  You should accept  it 
  53.     in order to proceed.  Once you press the "Yes, I accept" button,
  54.     you agree to be bound by the terms of this license agreement.
  55.     
  56.     After that, you will be prompted  for the target directory name. 
  57.     Type the path in the edit box, or choose a directory by pressing
  58.     "Browse" button.  On  systems with no Swing support,  the browse
  59.     button will not be displayed: you have to type the path manually.
  60.     
  61.     The system copies all files to the specified  location  and sets
  62.     up necessary configuration files.

  64.  C. Activate your copy of the software  by placing  the license file 
  65.     (license.txt)  into  etc/  subdirectory  of  your  installation.
  66.     license.txt should have been sent to you when you downloaded XEP.

  68. After activation, your XEP copy is ready to use. Please refer to the
  69. PDF documentation, contained in the doc/ subdirectory of the  target
  70. installation directory:

  77. 3. Deinstallation
  78.  
  79. The program places all its files into the target directory, and does
  80. not modify any system settings.  To deinstall it, simply  remove the 
  81. installation directory with all its contents.

  84. 4. Limitations of the Trial Edition
  85.  
  86. This edition of XEP is intended as a means for  interested  users to
  87. access the formatting quality and the performance offered by XEP. It
  88. has the following limitations with repect to the full version:
  89.  
  90. - Every page contains a label "XSL-FO/RenderX"  in  the  lower  left 
  91.   corner, hyperlinked to the XSL home page at W3C and to the RenderX
  92.   website at http://www.renderx.com. 
  93.  
  94. - Starting from page 11, all odd pages are printed blank. They still
  95.   undergo the full formatting cycle, so this edition can be reliably 
  96.   used to measure performance and memory footprint.
  97.  
  98. - Only PDF output is supported (no PostScript).

  103. RenderX provides no dedicated support for this  product  and  cannot
  104. guarantee a fixed response time for your questions.  You are invited
